How to get there:

Either by non-stop flights (30 min) from Chiang Mai with Nok-Air or Kan Air or by taking the bus. The buses from Chiang Mai roughly need 8 hours, by minibus (250 Baht) its about 6 hours. There are two ways, the north route via Pai is shorter and a bit quicker, but very curvy and no made for the ones you get carsick easily. The south Loop road via Mae Sariang is more driver friendly and  less curvy . Every guide book has details, or check out the Wikitravel page about Mae Hong Son

From Mae Sariang a bus leaves at 11.00 am and roughly needs 3-4 hours to Mae Hong Son and costs 69 Baht.

From the Mae Hong Son bus terminal it is a 15 minute walk to the center, but for 60 Baht you get your tuktuk to bring you into the center. The center is located around the lake that you can see in the map above, plenty hostels are slightly north of it.

Accomodation:

Baan Mai Guesthouse (080 499 1975)

There is only one big advise that we can give you backpackers on a budget. If you don’t have a problem sharing your bathroom (don’t worry, it’s really clean and spacious!) then there is only one place to go. In no other place you will find such a welcoming host like in the Baan Mai Guesthouse. It only has three rooms (300 Baht) and a bungalow (500 Baht) but the owner Yum will try to make your stay very special. She also serves amazing fruit shakes, offers cooking classes and is just the nicest person in this town. The location is great right by the lake in close walking distance to the night market and many restaurants. Also included in this price is the breakfast with toast, butter, jam and a welcome juice and the common area offers free tea, coffee and water.
